Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to introduce your students to the world of data and AI?

Look no further than the BBC Microbit Playground Survey!

First things first: what is the BBC Microbit Playground Survey? It's a nationwide survey that aims to get schools to use the microbits they've been given (over 700,000 have been distributed to UK primary schools!) and start exploring the world of data and AI.

The survey is a great way to introduce your students to data and AI, and it's suitable for primary school children. It's a flexible set of resources that can be tailored to your curriculum, no matter which UK nation you're in. Plus, it's a great way to get your students involved in a citizen science project!

So, how can you take part? Classes can choose from seven cross-curricular activities, and they can do them all using free online resources. The activities include planning, fieldwork, coding, and analysing data. And the best part? You can make it work for you, no matter how much time you have available.

The seven activities are:

  1. Introductory session: Talk about data and why it's important.
  2. Coding session: Train a machine learning model.
  3. Collecting data on surface temperatures.
  4. Investigating biodiversity in the school playground.
  5. Measuring the area of the playground.
  6. Comparing surface temperatures.
  7. Tracking physical activity.

All of these activities are designed to be easy for teachers to take part in, even if they're new to the Microbit. And who can take part? All primary schools in the UK can take part, and it's ideal for Year 5 and P6 classes.

Materials are available now on the Microbit Educational Foundation website, and you can plan it into your timetable whenever works for you. The deadline for submission is July 31st, and the nationwide results from ONS will be available in the autumn term.

So, what are you waiting for? Get your school involved in the BBC Microbit Playground Survey today and give your students an introduction to the world of data and AI that they'll never forget!
