Have you started to think about how to teach about AI in your class? In fact, have you started doing this already? Have you created or found resources or started to train others on AI, machine learning, or data science? If you have, we need you!

AI systems are transforming society. Governments are working out how and when to regulate AI products. Often, we don’t know if, or how, these technologies are included in the applications we use.  We must help our students learn about AI, machine learning and data science so that they can better understand the potential impact of this technology on their lives. But what should we teach, when, and how?

At the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre, we have started investigating teaching about AI in schools. We have found that much of the research done so far has been conducted at an undergraduate level, and even if it is at the school level, the teacher's voice is missing. We want to start addressing this gap.

We are organising a face-to-face symposium on Saturday, February 1st 2025, in Cambridge to bring together educators already starting to teach about AI in their classrooms.

On the day, we will work in groups to review the recently published UNESCO AI competencies and start considering curriculum and research opportunities and challenges. To help us review the materials, we will consider research themes such as the SEAME model, a simple way to analyse learning experiences about AI technology, anthropomorphisation, and computational thinking 2.0. These research themes have been successful in previous projects around AI and have become the cornerstone of the Experience AI resources co-developed with Google DeepMind. We look forward to exploring how they might help you teach about AI in your classrooms and shape new curricula.

Please note: At the symposium, we will not be looking at teacher productivity and related AI tools, or about general teaching and learning AI tools; our focus is on teaching about AI.

You can read more about the day here, and please sign up here by 9 December 2024.
