- The National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) provides free CPD and support through regional hubs.
- Teacher mentoring programmes and online platforms like Isaac and Ada Computer Science are invaluable for new teachers.
- Networking opportunities and events such as the CAS conference provide crucial professional development.
- Working with STEM ambassadors can significantly enhance classroom engagement and learning experiences.
During the meeting, Becci Peters introduced us to the wide array of online communities hosted by CAS. These communities are a lifeline for new teachers, offering a platform to ask questions, share resources, and connect with others in similar situations. Whether you are teaching vocational qualifications or tackling A-level content for the first time, these communities offer tailored support to help you navigate your teaching journey.
Adam Gibson from the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) highlighted the comprehensive support available through their network of 31 computing hubs across England. The free CPD opportunities, including webinars and face-to-face courses, cover topics from key stage one to A-level. The new A-level courses, addressing pathfinding algorithms and Boolean algebra, are particularly valuable. The NCCE’s structured pathways and certification programmes offer a clear roadmap for both specialist and non-specialist teachers to improve their subject knowledge.
Harriet from the Raspberry Pi Foundation introduced the Ada Computer Science platform. Developed with the University of Cambridge, this online resource acts as a comprehensive textbook for teachers and students, covering various specifications and focusing on effective pedagogical approaches. It is an essential tool for new teachers aiming to deliver high-quality lessons.
Networking opportunities were also highlighted during the meeting. Events like the CAS conference and other STEM-related gatherings offer valuable professional development and the chance to engage with a broader teaching community. These events provide insights into the latest educational trends and technologies and foster camaraderie and support among teachers.
The STEM ambassador programme was also discussed. These ambassadors volunteer their time to support schools and bring real-world experience and expertise into the classroom. Their involvement, from delivering workshops to leading assemblies, can enrich the learning experience for students and inspire them to pursue STEM careers.
The resources, communities, and professional development opportunities highlighted during the session are valuable tools for new teachers navigating the challenges of their early careers. By utilising these supports, teachers can improve their practice and better inspire and engage their students.
