As an educator, the end of an academic year is always a bittersweet moment. It is a time filled with a sense of accomplishment, as we witness our students' growth and development, but it also marks the end of a shared journey. Last week I found myself bidding farewell to my remarkable Year 11 Computer Science class, and I am filled with a mix of emotions. In this blog post, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we embark on with our students and share my thoughts and feelings as we part ways.

Over the past five years, our Computer Science classroom became more than just a space for learning code and algorithms. It transformed into a nurturing environment where students discovered their passion for technology, explored new ideas, and formed lasting friendships. The bond we developed extended beyond the confines of the classroom, as we tackled challenges together and celebrated each other's achievements.

It is truly remarkable to witness the growth and empowerment of my Year 11 students throughout the years. From the first day of class, where they timidly approached programming concepts, to now, as they confidently tackle complex coding projects, their progress has been remarkable. I am filled with pride as I reflect on the newfound skills they have acquired, the creative projects they have developed, and the problem-solving abilities they have honed.

One of the greatest joys of being a Computer Science educator is instilling a love for the subject in our students. Seeing their eyes light up when they solve a challenging coding problem or witnessing their enthusiasm as they dive into a new programming language is immensely rewarding. My Year 11 class embraced the world of Computer Science with eagerness and curiosity, and I am grateful to have played a role in nurturing their passion for this ever-evolving field.

As much as I have taught my Year 11 students, I must acknowledge the invaluable lessons they have taught me. Their resilience in the face of challenges, their ability to think critically, and their unwavering determination to succeed have been inspiring. I have learned that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge; it is about fostering an environment that encourages growth, exploration, and self-discovery.

A Farewell, Not Goodbye: As I bid farewell to my Year 11 Computer Science class, I am confident that our paths will cross again in the future. Some of them will continue their Computer Science journey in higher education, while others may pursue different paths. However, the impact we have had on each other's lives will remain. I am grateful for the privilege of being their teacher, and I am excited to witness their future accomplishments.

Final Thoughts:

As the academic year draws to a close, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and fulfillment. My Year 11 Computer Science class has left an indelible mark on my teaching career, and I am immensely proud of their achievements. While saying goodbye is never easy, I am confident that the knowledge, skills, and experiences they have gained will serve them well in their future endeavors.

To my Year 11s, I wish you nothing but success and fulfillment in all your future pursuits. Thank you for an incredible year!

Christiana, your post describes my fantasy for what computing education should like: full of creativity, agency, self-efacacy, passion, and “seeing their eyes light up”.

I am an out-lier, a geek, a computer scientist researcher Of course I would think that! So it is lovely to hear that dream being turned into reality in your classroom.

I would love to hear more stories from your classroom, especially how you took them from “the first day of class, where they timidly approached programming concepts” to the strong, confident students you describe. I’m sure that transformation didn’t just happen. You did a million things to make it happen.

You are an inspirational teacher. Thank you so much!
